ATF Investigating Stolen Guns from Memphis Business

MEMPHIS, TN - Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are working to find approximately 43 guns that were stolen from Range U.S.A. in Memphis Saturday July 1.

In a press release, the ATF said they are still doing inventory to find out exactly how many were taken. They did not specify how or at what time the thieves took the guns or what kinds of guns were stolen.

Authorities are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

A spokesperson with ATF said they are seeing an unusual high rate in gun store thefts and the number of guns taken in each case.

"This inventory can be dangerous in the wrong hands," said Julie Hill, co-owner of Arms Fair in Cordova.

"You want to know what happened. What are the specifics? So then you can take a look at your own risk you know," Hill wondered about Saturday's burglary.

"I think it's concerning not only as a dealer but also as a citizen. You don't want those out there," said Hill.

A spokesperson with ATF said investigators will compare the incident at Range U.S.A. to other recent gun store thefts for any possible patterns and connections. They can look at Nashville where they say there have been 6 gun store thefts in recent weeks and Birmingham where there have been 4 gun stores thefts, also in recent weeks.

They may also compare it to the case in Olive Branch where in May more than 60 guns were stolen from a truck at Academy Sports.

"You try to make it as difficult as you possibly can and still manage to do business," said Hill. She went on to say they have several security measures at the stores, including locking up every single gun daily in a 2,000 pound steel safe.

"We have it down to a system so it's really not that bad. But as my husband says it helps us sleep at night," said Hill.

According to ATF data, 616 guns were reported in thefts and losses in Tennessee, 311 in Mississippi and 257 in Arkansas in 2016.
