Bad News For Bad Guys In Tennessee: Public Safety Act Of 2016

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they throw the book at you, thanks to the Public Safety Act of 2016. Local 24's Mike Matthews explains.

The Public Safety Act of 2016 will certainly change the behind bars neighborhoods in Tennessee.
It's whole purpose is simple, according to State Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris (R-Collierville). "We're getting tougher on crime by getting smarter on crime."

Senator Norris and State Senator Brian Kelsey came up with the idea.
He and State Senator Brian Kelsey came up with this idea. They have been concerned that folks convicted of crimes like domestic violence or burglary, or big drug cases have been getting slaps on their felonious wrists when sentenced.
The Public Safety Act will make things tougher. "At the same time," according to Senator Norris, "...it does what they now call a validated risk assessment on some of the lesser crimes, to see if we can deal with these folks differently, while we're dealing with the gangsters more harshly."

Unless you've been wearing earplugs for the last 360 days or so, you realize violent crime in Memphis and Shelby County has been a big issue. A very big issue. Both the city and county have broken single year homicide records. Nobody is cheering about that. And often, the folks doing the crimes have been convicted before, done their time, and are back out breaking laws again.

If they've been using guns, they won't like what else Senator Norris has planned.  "We've got some other legislation that I'll sponsor dealing again with crooks and guns," he says. "Bad guys with guns. People who aren't supposed to have guns. Those of us who are lawfully-permitted gun owners don't like bad guys having guns. They're not supposed to have them... we are."
