"Best Buddies" Coming To Mississippi Thanks To Large Donation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - "Best Buddies" is coming to the Magnolia State, thanks to a local non-profit. Family Resource Center donated $75,000 dollars to bring "Best Buddies" to Mississippi.

Best Buddies international is a non-profit organization that helps those with special needs develop one-on-one friendships. It pairs a special-needs child with a “typical” child for long-term friendships.

Desoto County mom Denise Tibbens has been pushing for this program for years. Her daughter has a Best Buddy, and it's changed her life.

"Without this program my daughter would not have met all her friends,” says Tibbens.

Tibbens has been on a mission to match up Best Buddies in Mississippi. "She has been a typical teenager. She's been going and doing."

Denise's daughter Morgan attends Lewisburg High School, the only school in the state with the Best Buddies program.

Thanks to a $75,000 donation from Family Resource Center in Southaven, every special-needs child can have a best buddy.

"It's gonna change lives,” says Christi McCafferty, with the Family Resource Center.

"This has been a better program for the typical kids than it has been for the special needs kids,” says Tibbens.

Family Resource Center plans to implement Best Buddies next school year, and they'll start in DeSoto County.
