Block Party And Picnic For Peace This Weekend In Frayser

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Three days of music, food, family fun, and purpose are underway in Frayser. The Block Party and Picnic for Peace is marking its 12th year at the Ed Rice Community Center.

New this year, there will be a step competition between several greek organizations, and a youth boxing match.

This is three-day family friendly event, that at its core, tries to help people change their lives. Organizers have been working to get the Ed Rice Community Center ready for thousands of guests this weekend.

This is a free event featuring music, food and fun. But it also gives people access to jobs, and educational and health resources, that they might not normally have.

Now entering its 12th year and growing, organizers say the event is a way to reduce crime and improve people's quality of life.

"It tells us that we fill the void in the community” says Rep. Antonio Parkinson (D)-Tennessee. “We fill the void where there was a need. We've always wanted to build a signature event for this area of the city. It has grown to be the largest event in this area of the city and you know we're excited about that. We're excited about the growth."
