MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Memphis police are investigating after they say an accused burglar was shot by a resident overnight.
Investigators say it started when Emmanuel Lane, 28, broke into a home about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 3700 block of Sturgeon in Sherwood Forest. The victim says she awoke to someone yelling inside her home. She says she stayed in her bedroom until she heard the front door close and the person leave.
Police say minutes later, a neighbor awoke to his girlfriend saying someone was in their home. He told officers he ran to the front room and found Lane inside the front door screaming and putting his hands near his jacket. The man says that’s when he fired a shot, striking Lane.
Another man in the home says he saw Lane inside, and he struck Lane with his handgun in an effort to prevent him from leaving before officers arrived, but Lane took off.
Another neighbor approached officers on the scene and said he awoke to Lane yelling and breaking into his home. Officers were able to take Lane into custody there.
Lane was taken to Regional One in non-critical condition. Charges are pending.
