City Objects To Delay On Confederate Statues Court Hearing

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland says delaying a court hearing on the future of this statue until late December just doesn't make sense.

Nothing has made much sense in the fight to remove the statue of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Example: the Mayor has said before it makes no sense that a group of people who don't live in Memphis have the right to prevent the city from removing statues from its parks.

Want another one? It makes no sense, he says,  to go across the state for a hearing with the State Historical Commission, only to be told they won't be making any decisions on the statue.

What they did do was allow for a court hearing to determine whether the city has the right to take the statues down.

Which leads us to no sense example number three.
"Typically court things get delayed," Mayor Strickland says, "... but we are very disappointed and we are filing an objection saying we don't mind a week or so, but as I understand it, it's mid-December."

December 20th, to be exact. Nobody gets Parampa-Pum-Pumped about going to court in Nashville five days before Christmas. But it is important. The hearing will determine whether the city has to follow state law when it comes to removing the statues. If it does, the city will need approval from the historical commission.

Not to mention there are people who feel the city is taking far too long trying to legally remove the statues.

"Most of Memphis agrees with our position that we need to move these things legally," Mayor Strickland says. "We're trying to take the legal steps to do it. And we're respecting their process. We just want them to respect our wishes here locally to control our own parks."

The city's goal all along is to have these statues removed before April 4th of next year, which will be the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.
