City of Memphis & Memphis Police Association Tentative Agreement

MEMPHIS, TN - ( - The City of Memphis and the Memphis Police Association may be one step closer to coming to an agreement for the 2017 Fiscal Year Budget.

The two parties compromised a tentative agreement Friday night that would increase salaries for police officers.    
Memphis Police Association President Mike Williams took to Facebook to make it clear they did not get what they should have, and they are still well below the pay scale the city said it would honor. However, this agreement is a start for officers who have stuck it out.
"If they don't have the financial resources and they take a job as dangerous as this one is and they don't make the money it's not going to be worth it to them to put their life on the line," said longtime Memphis resident Dorrice Ritch.
Ritch said she is fed up with crime in the city and something needs to be done to keep good officers on the job. 
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland's office issued a statement Saturday saying the tentative agreement avoids the impasse process and would increase police officer's salaries.
It also stated: "Both sides feel that this is a good first step toward making the City competitive for purposes of police recruiting and retention."
In a Facebook post, the MPA president wrote the tentative agreement includes:
     -     2.75 percent pay raise for all bargaining unit members
     -     3.75 percent pay raise for patrolmen with 12 or more years of service.
     -     Bi-lingual pay of $75.01 per month.
     -     Hazard duty pay increase from $50 to $65 dollars a month.
     -     Paid leave of absence jumps from 15 days to 20 days a year.
Memphis police association members must still ratify the agreement. Plus, any salary increase needs to be approved by city council.
According to Williams' post no benefits were negotiated since they are not in the contract.
He also ensured the struggle is not over but they're happy to come to an agreement, adding it is a start but there's still a long way to go.
