Cohen Announces Additional Funds For Rape Kit Testing

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Tennessee congressman Steve Cohen and New York congresswoman Carolyn Maloney have secured an additional $4 million to help local law enforcement agencies reduce the number of untested rape kits.

This money brings the total federal funding level to $45 million.

This year, Memphis received $2 million in federal funds for rape kit testing.

And Wednesday's announcement  could mean more money to help expedite testing.

At its peak, more than 12,000 untested rape kits sat on shelves.

At last check, 4,300 rape kits remain untested.

That is according to backlog.org.

A local I-team investigation from May uncovered if Memphis had tested victims' rape kits immediately, rapes and other violent crimes might have been prevented.

Instead, thousands of kits sat on shelves…untested.

Some are 30 years old.
