Construction Of I-269 In DeSoto And Marshall Counties Remains On Schedule

DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. (localmemphis.com) - The largest construction project in the state of Mississippi is right on schedule, according to the state’s department of transportation. Dirt and bridge work on I-269 is complete.

"Construction of I-269 in DeSoto and Marshall Counties is right on schedule,” says MDOT PIO Jason Scott.

The final phase of I-269 is almost finished. MDOT officials say crews have to pave the remaining 24 miles from the I-269 junction with Interstate 55 in Hernando to Highway 302 in Marshall County.

"Once we get this 24-mile section of 269 completed, that's when you'll actually have your loop around Memphis,” says Scott.

Once completed, it'll connect Bill Morris Parkway in Collierville to Marshall and DeSoto Counties. It'll end at the I-55/I-69 interchange.

"That will allow travelers on 55 to get on to interstate 269 and connect with interstate 40 in Tennessee without ever having to go through Memphis,” says Scott.

The first two-mile section of Interstate 269, from Mississippi 302 to the Tennessee state line in Marshall County, was opened to traffic in October 20-15.

"In order to bypass some of that traffic, motorists will be able to use I-269 to get around Memphis and really increase those travel times and decrease the amount of congestion they run into."

I-269 will relieve traffic pressure on I-55 to Memphis, and help boost economic growth and development in North Mississippi.

"Business developers says wanna locate near an interstate," says Scott.

The final phase is expected to be finished in the fall of 2018.
