Convicted Murderer Dies In Mississippi Hospital

CLEVELAND, Miss. (localmemphis.com) - A man serving a life term for the murder of Tupelo woman has died. 

NEWS RELEASE FROM MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS:

A man serving life in prison for the 1986 murder of a Tupelo woman who went missing after going jogging has died at a hospital in Cleveland.

Randy Bevill, 58, died Friday, April 14, 2017, at 2:10 p.m. at Bolivar County Medical Center, where he was transported from the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman’s hospital for treatment.

Bevill, #25816, was tried and sentenced twice for the July 31, 1986, murder of Amy Clayton, 18, of Tupelo, in Lee County. 

Bevill was first convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in 1987, but the conviction was reversed on appeal. He was convicted a second time of homicide/murder, and sentenced to life April 16, 1992, as a habitual offender, based on two prior convictions of grand larceny and burglary of an unoccupied dwelling in Pontotoc County.

The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections through its services to victims is one of the hosts of an annual event with the state Attorney General’s Office in which awards are given in Amy Clayton’s name during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in April.
