Craig Fitzhugh Thinks His Small-Town Roots Will Help Him In Race For TN Governor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - House Democratic leader Craig Fitzhugh has some things in his background that no other candidate for Tennessee governor can claim.

One of the world's most famous singers was once Fitzhugh's babysitter. The lawmaker also plays a part in his hometown's Friday Night Lights. He’s been the PA announcer for the Ripley football team for more than a decade. All while doing other things that once in a while took him out of Ripley, Tennessee, but never for very long.

“I left the county and went to a college bigger than my county,” says Rep. Fitzhugh. “I have served in the military. I am a public school guy from day one. I am a rural guy, small business. I have made payrolls.”

Fitzhugh feels those rural roots separate him from former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, the other candidate in the Democratic primary race for Governor. Fitzhugh welcomes the party contest.

“I think that is good for the state,” says Rep. Fitzhugh. “We just don't have to sit and watch the other five on the other side fight it out to see who is Governor. We are going to be part of it.”

Fitzhugh points to 23-years in the state legislature, including many as Democrat house leader, as experience no other candidate has.

"I think I can offer a well-rounded Governor who can work with the other side, been doing it now for the last 10-years, been doing it for the last 23,” says Rep. Fitzhugh. “I am an old dog but I have some new tricks.”

When he was a young dog, Fitzhugh had a babysitter in west Tennessee who later became known as Tina Turner. He was asked if she would ever be part of his campaign.

“I am working on it, I am working on it, at least a robo call or something like that,” says Rep. Fitzhugh.

Tina Turner or not, Craig Fitzhugh says he'll be a major player in the Governor's race.

With several wealthy candidates in the race and one on the Democrat side, most observers feel keeping up with them in fundraising will be a key to Fitzhugh's campaign.
