DeSoto County Deputy On A Mission To Teach Kids Gun Safety

DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. (localmemphis.com) - In light of the recent accidental child shootings in the Mid-South, the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office is promoting gun safety. Deputy Alex Coker sat down with Local 24's Tish Clark to talk about what he's doing to keep guns out of a child's hand.

Sunday in Horn Lake, Mississippi, 9-year-old Cameron Williams accidentally shot himself in the chest. He died from his wound.

DeSoto County Sheriff's Deputy Alex Coker is on a mission to teach kids what to do and what not to do if they see a gun.

"I'm all about people being able to carry firearms, to own firearms. It's just that young, they don't understand the consequences,” says Coker.

Coker teaches the Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program, an NRA campaign, to young kids. He made a video that shows kids what to do if they see a gun.

"I sing with the kids you know; K through 4th grade. Stop. Don't touch. Run away. Tell a grown up.”

Coker says gun safety starts at home. Parents and adults should first instill in children to never touch a gun.

"It’s the parents and adults responsibility to also have some type of way to lock up the weapons,” says Coker.

Coker encourages gun owners to buy a pistol safe. They cost $50 to $100 dollars. It would mean parents could keep the weapon loaded and get to it quickly if they needed to. The point is, Coker says, the gun would be kept locked up away from kids.

"Spend the extra money. Christmas is coming up. And ask to have either a pistol safe or gun safe to keep your weapons locked up, so they cannot get into the hands of young children,” says Coker.

The DeSoto County Sheriff's Office is offering free Child Protect Safety gun locks. You can go by the Sheriff's Office in Hernando or give them a call.

Coker says schools can also request him to talk to their students about gun safety.
