HERNANDO, Miss. (localmemphis.com) - A detective with the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office is lucky to be alive after his patrol car was hit by a train.
It happened around 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon just steps from the sheriff's office off Vaiden in Hernando. The sheriff's office tells Local 24 there are no lights or crossing guards at that railroad track, so the detective did not see the train as he crossed the tracks.
A witness described what he saw. "He just smacked that car. The flashers or nothing, they weren't on. So, I guess he didn't know it was coming. I guess it don't work or something. When it came through and smacked that car and the train went straight over there and he parked over there. Wheels and stuff flew and I just whipped around."
The detective was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay.
