Elderly Man Killed In Apartment Fire In South Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn (localmemphis.com) - An elderly man was killed early Wednesday morning in an apartment fire in South Memphis.

The Memphis Fire Department responded to the Whispering Pines Apartments in the 2300 block of Dwight Road, off Airways, just before 1:15 a.m.

According to Lt. Wayne Cooke, MFD spokesperson, when firefighters arrived they could see flames shooting from the second floor of the complex. Lt. Cooke says, the fire was so bad that they could not get inside to fight the fire. They used two ladder trucks and got the fire under control within an hour.

During the search fire crews found the man dead in one of the units. The victim's name hasn't been released pending notification of family.

Two firefighters were also injured and taken to the hospital. They have since been released.
