Elvis Week Expected To Bring Big Money To The Bluff City

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - This August is the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. During Elvis Week, August 11th through the 19th, a new attendance record could be set, and area hotels and businesses could get an increase in revenue.

Tourism leaders believe the 40th anniversary celebration could eclipse the 30th, largely because this is the first year the Graceland area debuts not one, but two major additions to give Elvis fans from around the world another reason to descend on Memphis.

"We are really pulling out all the stops."

Libby Perry at Graceland said anticipation is ramping up to a fever pitch, less than a month to Elvis week 2017.

"It is a huge anniversary, those years that end in five or zero are the biggest,” says Perry.

Graceland leaders said the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death is not only a significant milestone but visitors this year also can experience two recently opened attractions.

"This is the first anniversary that we've had the Guest House of Graceland, and the new Elvis Presley's Memphis complex open, so we are expecting a lot of folks, it's kind of like throwing a party with no RSVP's,” says Perry.

"What this means to Memphis is quite significant because it extends our summer travel season,” says Kevin Kern with the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Kern said Elvis week is a critical chunk of the nearly $160 million in sales tax which tourism pumps into the local economy each year.

The staff at the Guest House of Graceland and the Days Inn across from Graceland said they are either sold out or close to it, every night of Elvis Week.

"These are dollars earned elsewhere deposited into our community,” says Kern.

We are told for this year's Elvis Week, Graceland leaders purchased more than the 30,000 candles typically bought for the annual candlelight vigil August 15th.

This year's Elvis Week also includes a concert at FedExForum August 16th with rare Elvis concert footage backed by a forty-piece symphony.
