Floyd Bonner Talks About Why He Wants To Be Shelby County Sheriff

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Floyd Bonner remembers when the Arlington Sheriff's Substation was built. He remembers a lot of things. Bonner's been on the department 37 years, and now he wants to be the big boss.

All three men who are currently candidates for Sheriff share one thing.
All of them spent decades working as deputies. But Bonner says there is one big difference. "Those other candidates have left. I'm still there. I've had 37 years of continuous service."

He is proud of that, Floyd Bonner mentions it a lot.
He started as a patrolman, and is now Chief Deputy, the second in command. "I've enjoyed my career," he says. "I've had a great career here and I would like to take it to the next level. I'm only 58 years old. I know I still have something left in the tank to give the citizens of Shelby County and I would like to take that next step. It's a very important job."

Bonner talks about improvements that have occurred over the years.
He likes to mention the jail; the Sheriff's Department is in charge of the jail.
20 years ago conditions were so bad the federal government almost took over operations.
Two weeks ago, it was accredited again. It is now considered one of the best facilities in the county.

He looks at the future, and he sees two big issues: juvenile crime and bringing in body cameras for all deputies. "We're going into the age of body cameras," Bonner says, "... and this is going to be a major undertaking, to store this data that we retrieve, redact it if called for by the courts. Naturally we're fighting the gang problem here. we're getting ready to double our gang size."

Floyd Bonner, Democrat, will have to meet Bennie Cobb, Democrat, in the May 1st primaries. The winner of that will move on to the August elections.
