Frayser Man Indicted For Murder In Death Of Acquaintance

(SHELBY COUNTY D.A. NEWS RELEASE) - MEMPHIS – A Frayser man has been indicted on first-degree murder charges in the shooting death last summer of an acquaintance who identified the shooter in a dying declaration to police, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Friday.

The victim, 21-year-old Anthony Pope, told police that Zachary Thompson shot him last Aug. 29 outside a small store in the 3900 block of Hawkins Mill Road. A witness also identified Thompson as the shooter.

Thompson, 24, turned himself in to police the next day and told officers he shot Pope after the victim shot at him first. A store video, however, shows Thompson exiting his vehicle with a gun and approaching the store as Pope was walking out.

The video showed that Pope did not fire at Thompson.

Thompson is being held without bond in the Shelby County Jail.

The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Pam Stark.
