MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis) - The owner of a property management group gave deposits back to area women after Local 24 I-Team got involved in their rental dispute.
"For me, it started in late June," said Demetria Givens. "He tried making it sound like it was my fault. I just wanted my money back after I realized the property wasn't going to be ready."
Givens reached out to Local 24 after her attempts at getting her deposit back from Davis Management Group failed.
"He kept giving me the runaround," she said. "The owner had me meeting him at different locations, even the Westin Hotel where he said he was living while his house was being built."
It was a similar story for Sharhonda Jones. She was interested in a property for rent on Laura Springs Drive in Raleigh. She said she contacted Clayton Davis.
"We signed a lease, and I gave him a $750 money order," Jones told Local 24 over the phone. She said she never moved into the house because it had plumbing issues.
"I just wanted my money back, but he never gave it back to me," she said.
Fed up, the women contacted Local 24.
We called Clayton Davis who claimed there was some type of mix up. He didn't go into detail when asked about the lease agreement with Jones and her refund.
He simply asked reporter Dave Detling, "What do you suggest I do?'"
Local 24 asked if he was going to return the women's deposits. He said he would in a few days.
"Sure enough, after you got involved I got my money back," said Givens. "I thought I did everything right. I checked the property assessors website and look what happened to me. We just have to be careful."
As a precaution, Givens said she filed a police report and says from here on out she will not use money orders as a form of payment.
