18-Year-Old Struck In Hit And Run In Hickory Hill This Weekend Has Died

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - The niece of a former University of Memphis basketball player and Globetrotter has died after a hit and run crash. 18-year-old Chelsea Williams died Monday afternoon at Regional One. The family says her organs are being donated to save other lives.

According to the Memphis police report, she was hit Saturday night in the 6600 block of Winchester near Ross Road in Hickory Hill.

Family members say Chelsea Williams was with her boyfriend when she was hit. They said the two had eaten at a nearby restaurant when Williams said she felt bad. They pulled into a fire station off Winchester to get help. But Lt. Wayne Cooke with Memphis fire said firefighters were on a call at the time.

The boyfriend said at some point, Williams ran into the street and was hit by a car. The car didn't stop. It kept going.

The family says it just doesn't make sense.

"She has a lot of people behind her pulling for her. She's a Dean student at the University of Memphis,” says Williams’ uncle Mike Wilson.

When Wilson, a former U of M basketball player and Globetrotter, heard his niece was hit by a car, he caught the first flight from D. C. to Memphis.

"I’m sure the Memphis Police Department, they're doing what they can. But we wanna do what we can to help with this investigation."

Wilson says his 18-year-old niece would never dart into traffic.

"She wouldn't have ran out in the middle of the street. And the person who did it just come forward,"

Wilson and his family just want to know what really happened. They say Williams is smart and she wouldn't intentionally run out in the road.

"We don't wanna speculate what happened. We don't wanna put blame on anybody or anything. But we know something happened to her."

Wilson says they're not pointing fingers, they just want answers. Holding back tears, Wilson pleaded for help. "If anybody knows anything uh what happened please contact the local authorities please contact me contact anybody at the news station anybody. We don't know anything. But what we do know is our niece did not run out in the street."

According to family members, Williams died Monday afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
