Judge Not Issuing Warrants Because Of Computer Problems At Shelby County CJC

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - New information on the trouble at 201 Poplar.  The Local I-Team has learned some judges have stopped issuing warrants because a new computer switchover has caused so many problems.

Not only have inmates gotten lost in the jail, the public defender’s office, the prosecutor's office, and court clerk's office are all having trouble with basic information about cases.

There have been so many problems with the new computer systems, one judge tells the Local I-Team he and many other judges are no longer issuing warrants for peoples’ arrests when they miss court, because no one really knows if the information they have is even accurate.

"I'm not issuing warrants for peoples arrests unless I know they were aware of their court date and purposely did not show up," Judge Bill Anderson says.

Almost a month into the computer switchover, information for cases are wrong, missing or just not available.

"There are many cases where the district attorney will have an arrest ticket and the clerk won't have the jacket with the documents in it. That’s a problem. Someone dropped the ball somewhere. We don't know if the data is right or there is a reason the jacket isn't in court,” says Judge Anderson.

Anderson says, some of the issues have improved, but there are still people stuck and lost in the jail. He referenced, one case on his docket Monday. "We can't find him. We don't know if he is in jail or not in jail so we finally disposed of the case."

The Shelby County Commission is meeting Wednesday to discuss the computer problems.
