Lakeland Board Of Commissioners Approves Resolution To Build New High School

MEMPHIS, Tenn (localmemphis.com) - The city of Lakeland, TN will soon welcome a new high school. Tuesday evening, Lakeland's Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the school board's recommendation of building a new high school.

Monday night, the Lakeland School System, the newly formed school district, passed the $33 million plan to build a high school on the Lakeland Middle School campus, and another $3 million for an expansion at Lakeland Elementary.

Two years ago, Lakeland residents voted down a $50 million plan to build a new middle and high school, and they wanted to know why they didn't get a chance to voice their opinion this time.

"The project could not move forward, it would cause a tax increase after January 1st. We're committed to no tax increase for our city. The only way we could do that is to move forward before the Trump tax plan goes into place," said Mayor of Lakeland, Wyatt Bunker.

"I'm afraid they're going to spend millions of dollars trying to save $1.4 million over the life of the loan. In other words, I think it's false. A false reason," said Stephanie Lefler, who opposes building a new high school.

The Industrial Development Board also approved the recommendations.  Lakeland School officials hope to break ground by 2020.
