Local 12-Year-Old Honored For Saving His Family During A Fire

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Jarvis Isom is proof 12-year-old boys can be heroes too.

"I went to go wake up my mom and my siblings and stuff up," said Isom. "Then we all started running out the house. I had my 2 baby brothers in my hands running out the door."

A year ago, an early morning fire broke out in his family's Southeast Memphis apartment. Isom told investigators after fire that he woke to a funny smell and says his first thought was to run out of the door. Instead he woke everybody in the house.

Isom's mom says they might all be dead if not for her son’s bravery.

Thursday, Isom was honored at the Memphis Fire Training Academy as a Civilian Hero, alongside the dozens of men and women of the Memphis Fire Department who have given extraordinary service to the community.

Fire Director Gina Sweat says Isom is the third child to receive the Civilian Award for his heroism.

"It just goes to show the incredible importance of fire education, public education in our schools, fire safety, and what to do when danger occurs," said Sweat. "So, I'm really proud of that young man. I'm really proud of the public educators and the Fire Museum of Memphis and what they provide to the citizens."

At one time, Isom wanted to become a baseball player. Now he plans on becoming a firefighter.
