Local Biz: Downtown Salon Aims To Cut Out Cancer

MEMPHIS, TN - In addition to setting trends both in architecture and beauty at their salon on South Main St., the husband-wife team behind Memphis' "Salon 387" is also making strides against breast cancer.

Brent and Elaine Clayton are partners in life and in business. Married for eight years, they opened Salon 387 this past February. Elaine handles the beauty and design.

"I actually hand built probably 80% of the upstairs, including light fixtures and built furniture," said Brent Clayton.

Cutting hair is how they pay the bills. They're also snipping and cutting away at cancer. This month, they have teamed-up with the American Cancer Society to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Brent is one of 35 Memphis men chosen for the "Real Men Wear Pink" campaign to raise money for breast cancer research, an issue that hits close to home.

"I actually have two people who played pretty big roles in my life here that have been affected."

Close friends and his inspiration in this effort, Valentina Cochran, a breast cancer survivor for three years, and Whitney Clifton, a survivor for eight.

"I'm very proud of him and his efforts here in his fight against breast cancer," said Clifton.

To Cochran, this fundraising isn't just to make people feel warm and fuzzy about giving, but ultimately, beating cancer for good.

"If you think about how much the human race has progressed in the last 50 to 100 years, I can't imagine we're not going to find a cure for this disease," said Cochran.
