A Shelby County School Receives Thousands in Grants To Help Families in Need

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Lettuce, herbs and other planted produce-- in just weeks, the fruits of their labor will be evident.

At Bolton High School, a new community garden made its debut. All of it is possible thanks to a $30,000 grant.

Once the vegetables grow, it will provide families in need across the Mid-south will get a 'fresh' option.

"Memphis is the number one city in the nation that is a food desert-- that means a lot of families in poverty-stricken areas doesn't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables," said Julency Myrtil, a Senior at Bolton High.

Bolton High partnered with the Kitchen Community non-profit to create this garden.
Myrtil is the student who took the lead.
She came up with the idea, and applied for the grant--- inspired in part by her father's diabetes diagnosis, and also one of her favorite quotes.

"Do what you can do, where you are, with what you have, and that's what I did," said Myrtil. "With all the support I have, I was able to expand this project and receive all the this support from all of these organizations."

Julency's efforts will not only provide fresh fruits and vegetables.

Another grant she received provided $500 to create three gardens outside the school cafeteria...
Another will help restore Bolton's agriculture program.

Julency also earned a $2000 grant from Lowes that will also improve the greenhouse.
