Local Cool Kid: KaMia Jenkins

Whitehaven High School Junior is earning scholarships to pay for college

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Years ahead of schedule, our Local Cool Kid isn't waiting to earn scholarships to help pay for college.

KaMia Jenkins is preparing today for tomorrow's dreams.

"I've had multiple problems with my ears and went through two or three surgeries and ear infections, so my own personal experience along with my growing interest with being an ear, nose and throat doctor made me want to be a doctor," said Jenkins.

Tops in her class at Whitehaven High School, this junior is working to make those dreams a reality.

Already, Kamia has applied for scholarships. She's continuing a school-wide tradition of earning millions to pay for school, and she's on deck--- two years before she graduates.

"Both of my parents graduated from here," said Jenkins. "So I'm carrying on that tradition."

"I knew about the school and that was one of the main reasons I came," she said.

She has earned a full-ride to Tennessee State University. She received a $3,000 scholarship from Duke University. Recently, KaMia received $1000 from DDS, Determined to be a Doctor Someday, money to help pay for college.

Since 2003, Whitehaven High School seniors have earned more than $400 million.

KaMia, now putting the class of 2019 on the map.

"I'm trying to be at the top of my class with the most," said Jenkins.
