MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Music touches us all and it is one of the reasons Overton High School is this week's "Cool School."
The music and band programs are among the most recognized school programs in the area.
This weekend, the President's band, the U.S. Marine Band, will perform.
Being part of the Overton High School band has its share of perks.
"People look up to us a lot. It's just fun," student Noel Medford said.
"It's a great experience you get to travel in different places," student Kem Gray said.
The are not quite rock stars.
"It’s kind of like being a local movie star... I guess you'd say," Medford said.
It is easy to see why this talented group of young musicians are in demand and asked to perform everywhere.
The marching band and jazz band are among the best. Their awards are proof.
For this week's Cool School, only one thing can top that.
It is the President's band.
“It's great to know they've chosen Memphis and Overton High School and share their talents with us. It's a wonderful feeling," Gray said.
Hosting the U.S. Marine Band is a big deal.
The U.S. Marine Corp could've selected any other city in Tennessee or the region.
But they chose Overton High School as one of their 29 stops.
"Memphis has that “it” factor," Gray said.
And Overton High School has a great legacy of its own.
"It is redeeming to me that to know that people are recognizing this program as a place to come when the marine band, this is the best ensemble in the world, arguably, to pick us. I'm humbled by that," band director Chris Piechuch said.
Tickets are free and still available.
The U.S. Marine Band will perform at Overton High School on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
