Local Disaster Drill Prepares Mid-South For The Worst

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - In the wake of the Las Vegas shooting, local organizations are doing their part to be prepared for the worst.

A mass casualty exercise happened Wednesday at the Agricenter. The exercise is meant to simulate a large scale disaster. For Wednesday's exercise, volunteers simulated a mass shooting.

Around 400 volunteers pretended they were shot or injured to test the ability and capacity of area health care facilities in Tennessee and Mississippi.

The Shelby County Health Department, the Tennessee Department of Health, Agricenter International, and hospitals and medical facilities in Shelby, Lauderdale, Tipton, and DeSoto Counties participated.

"There will be an after action report regarding this on the response and how people handled everything," says Dr. Helen Morrow with the Shelby County Health Department. "We'll see what worked well. See what we need to work on. See what resources we may need in this community that we already have."

The drill is an annual event. Each year the participants involved focus on a different type of disaster.
