Local Good News: Getting Fashionable In Downtown Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - It's all things fashion in Downtown Memphis on Main. And, it's all thanks to the City of Memphis giving two women a chance to grow and expand their online businesses. It's local good news.

Take a stroll along Main Street in Downtown Memphis and peek into this window, and you'll see rompers, jumpsuits, dresses, swimsuits, shoes, and more!

You can find all the new colors: coral, green, and nude inside this boutique at 9 On Main Street. But, it would not have happened for these two young entrepreneurs without an opportunity from the City of Memphis.

"Downtown Commission had a post on Facebook, and I found it through somebody sharing it.  And, I was able to go put in an application, and they called us for an interview. And, I came with a poster board and pictures and dressed in my entire line. And, they gave me an opportunity.  They called on Good Friday and told us that we got the store," said J.Lykey's Boutique Owner Jessica Ballentine.

Before, Jessica Ballentine just had an online business. She says this opportunity gives her a chance to prove she can be a vital part of Memphis' economy with a little style and jazz!

"Memphis gave me the opportunity to grow my business and for a first beginner it was a blessing to be able to do so," said Ballentine.

As fashion designer Donna Karan once said, “It's not just about dressing. It's about addressing”... the need to succeed in this case. And Ballentine says the city is helping her and other small businesses achieve their dream. And that's local good news.
