Local Good News: LA Salon Pampers Local Students

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - A local salon is pampering local students for getting good grades. It's local good news.

These students from Hanley Middle School are getting pampered. From getting their hair shampooed and styled, to twists, curls, and rods, they're getting all glammed up.

And the young gents are getting in on the action too.

"The kids today are receiving services from LA Salon in recognition of improvement in school,” says Dwan Chattron with LA Salon.

The salon day is based on academic performance, leadership skills, and conduct.

"In our community, it's great to have children understand the importance of self-esteem and their appearance,” says Celeste Harris with LA Salon.

For some of the students, it's a dream come true.

"I'm very excited because I never thought I could be here,” says Ashanti Powell.

Salon owners also say they hope this salon day will motivate students to stay in school, and inspire other students to improve their grades.

"I think anything that gives praise and reward will inspire other kids to want to do better,” says Chattron.

Little Jacob Wilder agrees. He plans on talking to his best buddy at school. "Make sure you have good grades."

"You always want to reward your kids. Let them know that what they are doing, we value that as parents, as educators,” says Chattron.

The owners of the salon say they will continue this program with Hanley Middle School, and they invite other schools to reach out to them too.
