Local Health Alert: Breast Cancer in Men

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Breast cancer is far less likely in men, but that does not mean it's not a concern. For men, the lifetime risk of getting the disease is about 1 in 1,000.

Mike Worsham was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly 20-years ago. He describes himself as someone who rarely went to the doctor's office beforehand. "I'm a typical man, you don't go to the doctor unless you're bleeding or a bone's sticking out."

Thankfully, he ignored that instinct when he noticed a lump on his chest. "I was doing dumbbell presses and due to exhaustion let the dumbbells down on my chest and I flopped them off and felt my chest and felt a knot there and it hurt," says Worsham. When that didn't heal quickly, he decided to make a doctor's appointment.

Worsham says the lump was right under his nipple. His physician initially told him it was likely a cyst, but had it tested. Following ultrasounds, a mammogram and biopsy, Worsham got the news he certainly did not expect.

"I was laying on the gurney and she walked in and said, 'scoot over' and she sat down beside me and looked over and said 'we've got a problem.'" His radiologist telling him this was certainly something to worry about: breast cancer.

To treat the disease, he underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy. He still annually has a mammogram to monitor his breast tissue, but has not had a reccurence.

He's encouraging other men, not to ignore any changes that raise concern and to seek medical attention immediately, if there's any change in their chest.
