Local I-Team Helps Neighborhood With Giant Sinkhole

MEMPHIS, tenn (localmemphis.com) -  A big sinkhole is causing big problems in one East Memphis neighborhood. People who live on Broadmoor, near Quince, say they called Memphis City Hall for two months complaining, and nothing was done until the Local I-Team got involved.

"It's dangerous. We just don't want anyone to get hurt," said one neighbor who didn't want to be identified.

A tape measure shows it's five-feet long by three-feet wide and more than 18-inches deep. People who live and drive here are growing impatient.

"It's just huge and needs to be fixed ASAP, or someone could really mess up their car, so it's got to be fixed," said Ticurious Howze.

Several neighbors say they have called in complaints over the past two months.

"We called MLGW, and they gave us a number, and they gave us a number, and they gave us another number," said Alan Bone, neighbor.

Bone says about a month ago, he was finally directed to call the Memphis 311 line. That's where you go to report all sorts of city issues. He was given a service verification code and told help was on the way. Then nothing happened.

Wednesday when the Local I-Team called city hall, we were told the 311 reporting system didn't work properly because of a glitch in the computer system. The service order was never passed on to the proper city department.

After our call, public works crews were sent to the site to see first hand the problem and barricade it.

The city is doing tests to determine what's causing the sinkhole; we're told it should be complete by the end of the week.

As of Thursday morning, neighbors tell us crews have started repairs.
