Lorenzen Wright's Mother Remembers Son On His Birthday

MEMPHIS, TN - Another birthday without her son and without any answers, former professional basketball player Lorenzen Wright's mother said it never gets easier.

Wright, who was shot and killed 6 years ago, would have turn 41 years old on Friday. His case remains unsolved.

"They say time heals all wounds, but not the death of a child," said Wright's mother Deborah Marion.

A day after his birthday Marion remembered fondly all of the times she would cook Wright's favorite dessert, pecan pie for his birthday, and wondered about the little things she wished she could experience with him.

"Would he have dyed it or just let it be gray," Marion wondered, "Being a parent it's a lot of stuff to think about. What would he have been doing in his old age with that gray hair?"

Wright was shot and killed in 2010. He was found in a Southeast Memphis field after he called 911.

There wasn't much evidence left for police.

"They just said they still looking. They be calling me about certain people, do I know this person or do I know that person," Marion said.

Marion said Memphis Police still checks in with her and she appreciates their continued work.

However, she is frustrated investigators outside MPD can't help law enforcement since Wright's case is considered an open investigation.

Since Wright's death Marion said she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and suffered a stroke, but she brushed it off.

"I got work to do. I gotta find out who helped murder my son," said Marion.

Like the past 5 years, family members returned to Memphis for Wright's birthday to honor his life and keep his name out there in hopes someone will bring them peace.

"Somebody one day is going to say, 'I'm going to help this lady because I'm sick of her every year, every year.' I'm going to do this every year. Somebody's going to get tired of my face because I'm going to keep on until the day I die," Marion said.

Wright's family will hold a balloon release at his grave site in Calvary Cemetary Sunday at 9:00 a.m. They have invited the public.
