Volunteer leaders rerouted, but ready to serve in Florida after Hurricane Irma made its mark

JACKSON, Florida. (localmemphis.com) - As Hurricane Irma rolled through Florida Sunday, some from the Mid-South put their safety aside and headed south to be in position to help.

"I will probably be hunkered here until tomorrow afternoon," Dr. Joe Carson said.

Life Church's Outreach Director spent Sunday in Jackson, Florida as the eye of Hurricane Irma barreled in southwest Florida.

"The wind is picking up pretty well, we are already seeing some pop up tornadoes and some flooding in this area," Dr. Carson said.

Once Irma's path shifted, Dr. Carson flew out of Tampa Saturday before its airport closed.

His hurricane relief work will now begin Tuesday, once its safe to return to the Tampa area.

'We've got a lot of friends down there, so we are definitely praying for them and praying for their safety," Dr. Carson said.

He will soon be reunited with some of members of his extended Life Church family.

"We've got a lot of people eager to get down here and always excited to give a helping hand," Dr. Carson said.

Sunday evening, volunteers like Brian Poindexter brought and then packed up bottled water, cleaning products and canned goods for a state ravaged by Mother Nature, but energized by the human spirit.

"At the end of the day, we just want to do our part," Poindexter said.

"We can't be there and have our hands on everything there in Florida, so hey, the best we can do is do it here."

The first group of volunteers from Life Church are expected to leave for Florida Friday. Church leaders expect several teams will also go down Florida in the weeks ahead.
