Memphis Celebrates Annual Southern Heritage Classic In Orange Mound, T.I. Perform At After Party

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Today's festivities leading up the Southern Heritage Classic began with a parade.

Local marching bands showed off their best tunes and moves as they played for the thousands of people that lined the streets of Orange Mound to see them.

Memphis Basketball Coach Tubby Smith served as the grand marshal for the parade.

It's the biggest event of its kind in the county.

Tailgating is a big part of the heritage classic, and rapper T.I. helped hype up the crowd before the game. It was part of the HBCU tailgating party.

T.I. talked with us about the importance of education and college before he took the stage.

"I think it's everybody's responsibility man, to take it upon themselves man, to educate themselves to rise above their environment, you know. Rise above their circumstances, and, you know, where you can see things for the big picture. And just, just kind of let stuff go and focus on the future. I think ideally what everyone will want to do."

T.I. is performing at Minglewood Hall Saturday night.
