MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - With the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest in full swing, the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau is reminding visitors to the Bluff City that good barbecue extends far beyond Tom Lee Park.
May is National Barbecue Month, so the Memphis CVB is launching the "Memphis Barbecue Challenge".
The contest is simple. Go to your favorite barbecue joint, take a picture, and post it on Instagram with the hashtag #MemphisBBQChallenge.
The picture with the most votes wins a smoker and barbecue gift basket.
The goal of the contest is to get visitors to return to Memphis long after Memphis in May is finished.
"This week we're celebrating the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, but barbecue is amazing in Memphis year round, so just because we're having the challenge right now doesn't mean visitors can't come all year round to enjoy Memphis barbecue," says Leah Gafni, director of online marketing for the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau.
There is one catch.
Since the contest is designed to promote tourism, residents of Memphis and Shelby County are not eligible to win the grand prize.
