Memphis Fire Looking For Men And Women Who Want To Work In Big Department

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - There's competition in a lot of things, including trying to get men and women who work for fire departments. Especially emergency medical technicians.

Using the big red Memphis Fire Department trucks as bait, what we have here at the Memphis Fire Museum is one big fishing event.

What Memphis Fire Director Gina Sweat hopes is qualified folks who work in other departments, will look at Memphis, will read the Memphis Fire history, where their EMTs at one time were considered the best in the country, and say, hey, this looks good to me.

"Memphis is a big metro department," according to Director Sweat. "There are lots of opportunities when working for a metropolitan department that you don't get in a smaller department."

Director Sweat almost sounds like she wrote the script for volunteer firefighter Matthew Langford to say. He was one of those men and women who came to the Memphis Fire Museum to apply to work with Memphis Fire.

"I believe with the Memphis Fire Department," Matthew Langford, a volunteer firefighter says, "... it will open up a bunch of doors for me. I'll have a lot more opportunity to prosper. Hopefully I'll be employed here and will probably mean I move up in the ranks of the Memphis Fire Department."

Firefighters have left the Memphis department over the years. It is often an overlooked issue, much more attention has been paid to police officers leaving.

But firefighters have left as well, especially EMTs. In many instances they have moved to smaller communities for less pay, but better benefits.

Director Sweat is hoping this plan will reverse the trend.

"They already have some experience," she says, "... so we're going to fast track them through our training program to get them familiar with our processes and our equipment, get them on the streets faster, and it's a win-win for everybody."
