Memphis Mayor Wants Confederate Statues Down And Gone By Next April

Memphis, TN - Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland is tired of looking at Nathan Bedford Forrest and Jefferson Davis Statues.

He wants them gone by the time the world comes to Memphis to remember Doctor Martin Luther King on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

"Our goal is to have both statues down by April 4th, next year," he says. "I can't tell you how we are going to get there. Our first step is October 13th. I have said repeatedly that we want to do it in a legal way and I am optimistic we're going to get there."

This is the first time the mayor has set a specific date to have the statues down it's the same date that critics of the mayor wanted.

The group "Take 'em down 901" still is advocating the mayor not go through the historical commission or the courts, and just take the statues down.

Mayor Strickland says, "There's a reason that those critics don't take it down themselves. Because they know it's illegal. They don't want to be arrested but they think it's ok if Jim Strickland takes them down and breaks the law because the burden will be on me."

Strickland is using a similar strategy to when he fought a potentially devastating de-annexation bill last year. 150 ministers sign a letter, City Council members and County Commission members agree the business community will come soon,"  he says.

Mayor Strickland says the city can walk and chew gum at the same time, so for the critics who say they're ignoring crime Strickland says they're not ignoring anything, including how people feel about the statues.
