Teenager Charged In Memphis' First Homicide Of The Year

MEMPHIS,TENN (localmemphis.com) - Memphis Police have charged two men for firing shots into a group of people New Year's Night killing an 18-year-old woman.

Police say 17-year-old Jaylen Clayton and 22-year-old Devante Robinson with first degree murder in connection to the shooting.

On January 1, Tatum became the City of Memphis' first homicide victim of 2017. It happened around 8:00 Sunday night in the 3000 block of Danville in Parkway Village.

Monday night Tatum's family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil in her name. This family says they've been forced to deal with the violent loss of a loved one before.

"We recently lost my aunt like this last year, Katrina Malone," said Kiara's family member, Onisha Malone. 33-year-old mother of 5, Katrina Malone was shot to death in September of 2015. She was Onisha Malone's aunt.

Monday night, Onisha has lost another family member to gun violence. The unfortunate truth is that 18-year-old Kiara Tatum will be known as the 1st homicide victim of 2017.

"So, it's a hurting feeling to lose another family member like this because we haven't gotten justice for our first one," Onisha.

Family and friends leaned on each other for support during a vigil for the Lemoyne-Owen College student Monday night in the very place where she was killed.

The memory haunts Kiara's mother. "She didn't bother nobody. I just don't understand why would they take my  baby from me,"

Kiara's mother, LaToya Tatum fought through tears recalling her last moments with her daughter. "I'd just seen my baby 5 minutes ago, and when I come back they tell me she'd been shot," sobbed Tatum.

LaToya Tatum says she always warned her children about the dangers of the streets. Family and friends say what hurts most is that a bullet not meant for Kiara took a life of promise.

"For a mother to go pick up her child and she's just laying there, you can't do nothing about it, you just don't understand," said Tatum.

While there was a vigil for Kiara tonight, funeral arrangements are pending.
