Methodist University Hospital Celebrates Its Living Liver Donor Program Anniversary

MEMPHIS, Tenn (localmemphis.com) -  A Local Health Alert,  Methodist University Hospital's Transplant Institute celebrated its one- year anniversary for its living liver donor program

Methodist is one of only a handful of transplant centers across the country that offer a living liver donor program.

Doctors, patients, and donors celebrated the program's success.

Keith Bridgen donated part of his liver to his sister.

Bridgen told Local 24 News, "My sister was diagnosed with hepatitis and her score was low so she would have been a while getting a cadaver donor so I volunteered to give her mine as a living donor. My liver has full grown back to normal size with no complications."

Because a person's liver is usually larger than needed a part can be removed and transplanted in another person.

The liver is able to regenerate within weeks.
