Mid-South Mission Of Mercy Continues Free Dental Clinic Saturday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Mid-South dentists are coming together to brighten the smiles of thousands of people. The third annual Mid-South Mission of Mercy is being held at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova. The two-day event ends Saturday.

The annual clinic provides free services to anyone who needs it. Several hundred dentists, volunteers, and other medical professionals are expected to perform about 2,500 procedures during the two-day clinic. The only thing you need to bring is yourself.

Dentists are treating every person who walks through the door, unless they have fever of 101.5 or higher. Because of the flu epidemic, everyone's temperature is taken when they arrive. So far, no one has been turned away.

"I wanted a free teeth pulled, but they pulled all four. They pulled four teeth. Yeah, so I'm happy,” says Tamara Jenkins.

Jenkins is one of more than 2,000 people who are tending to their teeth.

"I inherited these bad teeth. They were broken. So, I wanted ‘em outta my mouth, so I wouldn't be embarrassed. Cover my mouth and stuff like that,” says Jenkins.

Local dentists with the Mid-South Mission of Mercy say the providing free services to people in need is rewarding. Just seeing the smiles on their faces is worth more than any amount of money.

"You are that joy. The change of their facial expression, eye expression. Everything is just immense,” says Dr. Hassan Bashiri.

"I feel great! I can finally put air through my teeth,” says Juan Sanchez Jr. "I think having a bright smile gives people confidence."

"Great! I gotta a new smile!" says Juan Sanchez.

Father and son Juan Sanchez and Juan Sanchez Jr. haven't been to the dentist in a couple of years, so they got their teeth cleaned. They used their wait time to bond.

"Me and my dad were just talking and time just flew by,” says Sanchez Jr.

Sanchez Jr. doesn't have insurance right now. His dad does.

None of this would be possible without the hundreds of volunteers, no matter what their position.

"I get over here at 4 o'clock in the morning and make coffee so all these volunteers and people coming in, I try to keep ‘em happy and have hot coffee for them,” says Wayne Prather. "I think this particular thing here is a great ministry. A lot of people, they can't afford it and they're hurting and they need help."

"They know this is not for profit. It's just for love and for God,” says Dr. Bashiri.

The clinic runs Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Bellevue Baptist Church on Appling Road in Cordova.

For those who can’t make it to this Free Clinic, there are other services available. Not all of them are free, but many places offer payment plans or reduced prices.
