MPD Director Mike Rallings Says City Hall List Is Needed For Security

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Memphis Police Director Mike Rallings says he will review the "A" list concerning security at City Hall. He will review it, but he has no intentions of getting rid of it. Local 24's Mike Matthews has the story.

Memphis Police Director Mike Rallings knew the questions were coming.

He talked with Memphis City Council members about officer overtime, but he knew once he left this meeting he was going to be asked about the so called "A" list.

So he ticked off his reasons for it; one, two, three.

"Number one," according to Rallings, "... no one is banned from City Hall. Number two, that was not a political list. And number three, as the Police Director, my number one responsibility is to maintain public safety."

Rallings isn't apologizing.

He will meet with Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland and they will review the policy; how they decided to put certain people on this list and leave others off.

That's a big question.

It's one that Fergus Nolan has. "My record is as clean as a whistle," he says.

Nolan was one of two people arrested last summer during a protest at Overton Parks greensward.

His charges were dropped. Why is he on the list, he asks.

Director Rallings won't answer."We're not going to get into that right now," he says. "We will take time to go back through our procedures to make sure that they're in the best interests of public safety and we'll report later."

When we asked why he wouldn't tell us how they came up with the names, he said. "We are currently reviewing the process. Once we've done that we will get back with you."
