MPD Severs Ties With Counselor After Posts About "Thugs In Blue"

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - The city of Memphis has severed ties with a counselor who worked with first responders, after disparaging comments about police officers on Facebook came to light.

After a string of officer involved shootings last summer, a post on Kelli Davis' Facebook page called some officers 'Thugs in Blue.”

A Memphis police leader who spoke with Local 24 applauded move by the city.

Since last fall, Davis taught a class to help first responders, including Memphis police officers, deal with stress.

Davis' is now done, after the post months ago from her Facebook page came to light.

“It's so unfortunate because I heard the training was excellent,” says Mike Williams of the Memphis Police Association. “But when you have the ability to do that training, but at the same time on the reverse side of that you may not have a love for the police, that doesn't go well together."

In wake of the shooting deaths of Dallas police officers, A Facebook post on Davis’ page in July 2016 compares 'real officers - the good ones' to 'trigger happy thugs in blue."

Davis recently met with city leaders to discuss the posts.

In a statement, an MPD spokesperson said, "The administration and the police department believe it is in the best interest of police and other first responders that the city sever ties with Kelli Davis and Merci Counseling Services."

Williams supported the decision. “It's hard to get us to open up in the first place, and then when you feel like your trust has been violated, or you feel like you feel a certain way about us, which coincides with a lot of the environment around the country, that takes us back a little bit."

We tried to get Davis' side of the story at her counseling office, but no one answered.

We also emailed and didn't hear back, and was hung up on after calling Davis' listed telephone number.
