Mulch Fire Continues To Burn In South Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - More than 150 firefighters are working to put out a mulch fire in south Memphis. The fire has been burning since about 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Michael's Tree and Loader Service on Knight Arnold near Getwell.

No one has been hurt, and fire officials say the flames aren't threatening any nearby homes or businesses.

The fire is under control and expected to stay that way as long as the wind stays calm.

Heavy smoke hovered over the area in south Memphis since Sunday afternoon; it could be seen for miles.  Lt. Wayne Cooke with the Memphis Fire Department said they're not sure what caused the fire yet, but it's confined to the rear west part of the property. He says several piles of mulch, debris, and trees are smoldering.

More than 50 pieces of fire equipment are being used. Crews are also using bulldozers and other heavy equipment to rotate and turn the piles of mulch and debris, to help release heat that may be trapped.

MFD is rotating firefighters every couple of hours to make sure they don't get exhausted. It's unclear how long firefighters will be on the scene. They're watching wind conditions and checking for hot spots.

Michael's Tree and Loader Service is open for business.
