Pink Palace Hosting Science Night For Upcoming Eclipse

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - We are less than a month away from a rare solar eclipse and the Pink Palace is getting you ready with a fun event.

A Family Science Night with an astronomy theme will be held Friday, July 28th at the Pink Palace from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

There will be telescopes out on the lawn, planetarium shows inside, and even an astronaut boot camp. The world's largest functioning pair of eclipse glasses will also be on hand for visitors to check out.

The event will be a fun and easy way to prepare for the upcoming solar eclipse.

"This is a rare event and it's something that we can actually observe from earth, which is kind of rare with astronomy that you can be an observer with your naked eye, so that's a great thing," says Hannah Crain, the manager of public and special programming for the Pink Palace's education department.

You can also learn about some of the lesser known aspects of the eclipse.

"There's also going to be a neat effect called the pinhole effect where all the shadows that are coming down, we can see that moon shape everywhere. So that will be a really cool effect we can see in Memphis because we're not directly in the path of totality," says Crain.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling the Pink Palace or ordering online.
