Suspect In Custody After Shooting In Bartlett

BARTLETT, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Bartlett police say they have a suspect in custody after a gunman shot a man, then stole a woman’s car. They say Robert Lee Brooks III is charged with aggravated assault and carjacking.

Police say the shooting happened during a car sale around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the corner of Bartlett Boulevard and Stage Road, in a parking lot.

Local 24 was first on scene.

Police say the victim was planning to sell a car to Brooks. After Brooks paid him $700, police say he changed his mind, and wanted the money back. They argued, and police say Brooks fired a shot at the victim. It ricocheted and hit the victim in the abdomen.

They say Brooks then pointed the gun at the witnesses who were there to drive the victim after the sale. Police say Brooks forced them out of the car, and they all started running away. Brooks took off in the woman's car.

"It happened fast and I was nervous, but I saw him run from where this gas station is to approximately the Applebee’s parking lot,” says witness Tanywa Sallie.

Police say Brooks surrendered Wednesday afternoon at Bartlett Police headquarters.

The victim is expected to be okay.
