SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (localmemphis.com) - Southaven Police are providing extra security at Southaven Middle and Southaven High Thursday after an “alarming” social media post.
According to a DeSoto County Schools spokesperson, school officials contacted police after parents notified them of the post making threats to the schools. A snapchat post making the rounds showed someone claiming students would be bringing guns to school.
Southaven Police Captain Mark Little says it started Wednesday when a fight broke out as Southaven middle was dismissing for the day.
"This all stemmed from that, you know, somebody sees the fight and they start posting,” says Little. “It's unknown at this time who actually sent the first post about the possibility of a gun being brought to school, but you know this happens periodically. We have to remember what is put out in social media isn't always 100% correct."
In a statement, DCS says, “Even though there did not appear to be any credibility to the post, the Southaven Police Department provided extra security at Southaven Middle School and Southaven High School Thursday morning as a precautionary measure.”
Captain Little says the police department had extra patrols at schools as a precautionary measure. He says it's unclear yet if the students involved will face criminal charges.
Southaven Police released this information late Thursday afternoon:
The Southaven Police Department was made aware last night and began investing concerns that were posted on social media regarding a threat of a student bringing a weapon to the Southaven Middle School today. That rumor could not be confirmed. To err on the side of caution, the Police Department had extra officers on campus today. The students at the core of this matter were also interviewed. There was no validity found.
This afternoon, a SHS student brought 3 other juveniles to the school where it was rumored that they may have had words with some of the athletes on the soccer field. It was rumored that after the vehicle left, that there was a loud noise that it was believed to be gunshots. Witnesses were interviewed and Officers located the 4 juveniles and interviewed them as well. There was no gun located.
No active threats were ever determined.
The school is dealing administratively with all students involved.
The principal at SHS has cancelled the basketball game scheduled for this evening only due to fear by the parents and students caused by the social media frenzy. It was not cancelled due to any safety concerns. As the safety of all students is our primary concern, the Police Department and the School Administration will continue to monitor the situation.
