Popular Nightclub Owner Robert "Hollywood" Raiford Dies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Local nightclub legend, Robert "Hollywood" Raiford has died. The 75-year-old died early Wednesday morning of natural causes.

Friends say he had been sick for months, but he fought it and always got back up.

You could usually find Raiford spinning records and DJ'ing at Paula & Raiford’s Disco on Second Street, which he co-owned with his daughter. He also owned Raiford’s Hollywood Disco before it closed.

Local 24 spoke with Marcus Grandberry, who has been close friends with Raiford's daughter Paula for more than 20 years. Friends and family members are heartbroken and devastated over Raiford's death.

Grandberry was visibly upset, but chose to go on camera because he said Raiford would've wanted him too.

Raiford was a colorful character who loved to be noticed. He loved attention. He loved to entertain. He loved to wear outrageous outfits.  And he loved to meet everybody that came in his club.

Grandberry said that Raiford was spinning records at the disco just two weeks ago, and he can't imagine Raiford's without the man himself.

“When I heard it I was devastated because I've known the man, the legend, Raiford. And he was always such a great person and he had such a great heart. And he never met a stranger,” says Grandberry.

A big question on everybody's mind is will Raiford's close now that he's gone? Grandberry said that he does not believe Raiford's will close.

He hasn't talked to Raiford's daughter in detail about it yet, but he expects that she'll keep the club open to honor of her dad, and keep his legacy alive.
