MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - An investigation is underway after the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says a robbery suspect was shot by a pizza delivery driver who thought the guy was going to rob him.
It happened about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night in the 8100 block of Portree Drive, in the Southwind Lake Apartments. According to a SCSO spokesperson, a Papa John’s delivery driver was delivering a pizza, when he was approached by two suspects, and one of them pointed something at him. That’s when investigators say the driver fired three times, hitting one suspect.
The suspect was taken to Regional One in critical condition.
Investigators say they have four suspects in total. Three others were stopped in the 4200 block of Hacks Cross and taken into custody. They are charged with aggravated attempted robbery and aggravated assault. Only one name and mugshot has been released - Tjohntay Woods, 18.
The delivery driver has not been charged.
Papa John’s released this statement from its corporate office:
"We are aware of this incident and the local franchisee is working in full cooperation with the authorities. We understand the franchisee is also reviewing the facts internally and will address any employee infractions as appropriate."
