Senate Foreign Relations Committee To Discuss U.S. Nuclear Arsenal Procedures

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - A Senate committee thinks it's time to look closely at who controls the U.S. nuclear arsenal and procedures for its use.

Republican Senator Bob Corker is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He's also an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump.

During the meeting Tuesday, Corker explained the high responsibility the President has with these nuclear codes in his possession.

"But this process means the President has the sole authority to give that order, whether we are responding to a nuclear attack or not,” said Sen. Corker. “Once that order is given and verified, there is no way to revoke it. To be clear, I would not support changes that would reduce our deterrence of adversaries or reassurance of our allies. But I would like to explore, as our predecessors in the House did 41 years ago, the realities of this system."

After the hearing, Corker said that he expects congress to continue to review questions about the President's authority "because it is a sobering issue."
