Shelby County Emergency Preparedness Chief Running For Sheriff

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - When we have bad weather, snow, ice, even flooding, we always come to the Shelby County Office of Emergency Preparedness. For the last three years, the man in charge has been 51-year-old Dale Lane. Now, he wants to be the next Shelby County Sheriff, and you see a guy who's been in charge over here the last few years, letting you know what's up. Dale Lane now wants to be sheriff. "And," he says, "... I believe with everything in me the best days are ahead of us."

Dale Lane is one of those glass is half-full guys.
He was a Sheriff's Deputy in Shelby County for 26 years, before moving into the Office of Emergency Preparedness.
Now he wants to get back into law enforcement.
He is a Republican, but says political affiliations aren't the big issue in this race. "I know," Lane says, "... that we can put a problem-oriented community-wide focus, crime-fighting strategy, back together that can absolutely make a difference."

He's a stickler for following the law, even in an interview.
Lane took a half-day vacation to do this interview, and did it in our parking lot, because it would be unethical to be paid by the county and do personal politicking.
Dale Lane is just somebody who follows the rules, follows the law, to set an example.
"We want to get our young people on a new path. We want to get them going. We don't want them to even consider a gang lifestyle or anything outside of a very bright future for them."

He's not the first person to say those words, and he won't be the last.
Lane likes to emphasis his education, his experience, and the results of his work.
He says he's got something else. "You have to have passion to bring results, and I bring passion at every level of leadership that I've had. I am not a status quo guy."

So far, Dale Lane is the only Republican in the race, meaning he doesn't have to worry about a May 1st primary, only the August election.
